Is The Online Citizen getting foreigners to freely write about politics in Singapore? The news site was recently under scrutiny for publishing false allegations about Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and the Oxley Rd property. I was curious about the writer and only needed simple Internet search to find out that she is actually a Malaysian.
She goes by the name “Kiara Xavier” on TOC but her real name is Rubaashini Shunmuganathan.
Her TOC profile (https://www.theonlinecitizen.com/author/rubaa) shows the hundreds of articles that she has written for the site. Many of them are about politics in Singapore, including one of her recent articles which contained defamatory claims about the Lee dynasty.
Similar to her TOC profile, she uses “rubaa” or “rubaashini” in her social media accounts.
There is also a Facebook comment referring to her by her real name, Rubaashini Shunmuganathan, and saying that “Kiara Xavier” is her pen name.
Online records will show that she is a Malaysian living in Shah Alam.
Edit: Looks like TOC has confirmed her identity by changing Kiara Xavier’s writer profile to her real name, Rubaashini Shunmugathan. Is Terry Xu desperately showing that he has nothing to hide or does he think it is ok to sabo her now?
Why is a prominent news site like TOC hiring a foreigner to publish claims about Singapore and defame our Prime Minister? I think it is not right for TOC to let foreigners continuously report on singapore and interfere with our politics. Singaporeans who do not know better will believe whatever they write. Who knows if they have other intentions?
As a popular news site, I am sure it is not difficult for TOC to recruit Singaporeans. What is TOC or Terry Xu trying to do by choosing to hire foreigners? Maybe they should practise what they preach instead of accusing others for hiring foreigners. We always say NS for sinkies, jobs for FTs, i guess this is true even for an established media like TOC?
