RIGHTS LAWYERS SHOULD DEFEND TRS PRO-BONO

m_ravi_remy_choo_peter_lowL-R: Lawyers M Ravi, Remy Choo Zheng xi, Peter Low

1 Singaporean and 1 Australian were arrested by the police under the sedition act for embellishing an article on The Real Singapore (TRS) that stoked “ill-will and hostility between races”, the mainstream media reported.

Those two are allegedly the owners of The Real Singapore (TRS).

TRS prides itself as the voice of the average Singaporean. They may have made a mistake, they may not. The two have been formally charged. It is now up to our independent legal system to judge their wrong-doings, if any.

But you have to give TRS some credit for balancing the lop-sided press system in Singapore.

The size of TRS and its influence would have raised some eyebrows in the PAP-government. The accused, Yang Kai Heng and Ai Takagi have the right to represent themselves in court or by a lawyer.

The million dollar question is – any lawyer dare to step out to represent the duo?

At the back of my mind, I can think of 3 lawyers who are known in Singapore for their liberal stance and represented their clients who stood against the PAP government or its laws & policies – Remy Choo ZhengXi, M Ravi and Peter Low.

M Ravi is well-known for his anti-death penalty stance and helped to sparked off a by-election in Hougang SMC. Remy Choo is co-founder of theonlinecitizen.com (TOC) and he is vocal against legislation that restricts media freedom. Peter Low acted for Workers Party in the past and defended Far Eastern Economic Review against defamation suit by Lee Kuan Yew.

Will any of these lawyers defend Yang and Ai Takagi pro-bono and return us our freedom of speech which we deserve?
